Trump's propaganda machine is challenging artistic institutions. Click here to thank those taking a stand. In an unprecedented move, Trump has purged Kennedy Center trustee members, made himself chairman, added people like Fox News' Laura Ingraham as trustees, and appointed a loyalist hack as "interim executive director." Trump has been clear about his purpose. He wants to put a halt to the Kennedy Center's "anti-American propaganda." Of course, no such thing exists. Trump simply does not want to be challenged by the independent voices and cultural criticism of art. Some have taken a stand against this takeover. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds resigned as artistic advisor. Screenwriter and producer Shonda Rhimes resigned as a trustee. Actress, writer, and producer (and co-creator, co-writer, and star of the HBO television series Insecure) Issa Rae (pictured below) canceled her sold-out show, writing: "[D]ue to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue." Philadelphia rock band Low Cut Connie has also canceled a performance. Singer and actress Renée Fleming has stepped down as Artistic Advisor at Large.
