Friend,

By now, you’ve probably seen that Donald Trump has executed an authoritarian takeover of Washington, DC — a vibrant, multicultural city that has long served as a punching bag for the far right. While Trump paints the city as a burnt-out dystopia, those of us who live in DC know that is a complete lie.

Facts have never mattered to Trump, though, and now he has taken over the DC police department and deployed the National Guard and other federal police agencies. These moves are certainly intended to provoke DC residents and instigate a media sensation that distracts from Trump’s many political problems.

It will be hard to stop Trump’s authoritarian moves in the short term, but he will need Congressional support to keep his takeover of DC going beyond 30 days. That’s why we’re asking you to contact your senators and representative now to tell them: no votes for Trump’s invasion of DC.

After 30 days, Trump can no longer unilaterally control DC’s police without Congressional approval. That’s why it’s so important that we start contacting our representatives now to build momentum for a shut down of Trump’s power grab.

This is a trial balloon from the administration to see what level of authoritarianism it can get away with. That’s why it’s crucial for us to join together to combat this unconscionable attack on DC’s right to self-government.
