There's a chance today to end an endless war -- or at least to end the major role of the United States in prolonging it. The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to debate and vote on H Con Res 21, a resolution introduced under the War Powers Resolution, and reading in its entirety:

"Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That, pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution (50 U.S.C. 1544(c)), Congress directs the President to remove the United States Armed Forces from Syria by not later than the date that is 180 days after the date of the adoption of this concurrent resolution."

The resolution has the support of the Progressive Caucus, fulfills a promise of the 2020 Democratic Party Platform, and is backed by a group of Republicans. The U.S. military presence in Syria fuels conflict and impedes humanitarian aid.

There's no good reason not to pass this, but Congress will not pass it unless Congress Members know we are watching.

The most urgent reason to pass this resolution is the well-being of the people of Syria. But there's another reason as well. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 needs to be used to establish the existence of Congress as something more than an imperial court.

The world desperately needs this assertion of morality and backbone, because it needs the same step taken on various other wars, and the threat of it established to discourage the creation of more wars.
