Dear friend,

“We are inching dangerously close to nuclear war, and must do everything we can to reduce the risk of nuclear catastrophe.”

Ro Khanna spoke those words on the floor of the House of Representatives last week, taking a step toward reinvigorating the fight against nuclear weapons in Congress.

At a time when the obligation to pursue disarmament has been all but dismissed, Congressman Khanna’s speech affirms an ambitious agenda: returning to key treaties, reducing nuclear arsenals, and enacting a No First Use policy to address the very real risk of triggering a nuclear war.

But the best agenda means nothing without a movement to back it up. Defuse Nuclear War is working to reduce the risk of nuclear war, and that means putting pressure on leaders to find real, workable paths toward ending the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Now is a perfect time to get involved. From June 10 to 16, a wide range of activities across the United States and beyond will honor the life and work of Daniel Ellsberg by calling for urgent changes to the nuclear weapons status quo. Join us by organizing a picket line, teach-in, vigil, or other event.

Check out a list of suggested activities here, and click here to learn more about what we’re fighting for.

Additionally, on Thursday, May 2 at 5:30 PM PT / 6:30 PM MT / 7:30 PM CT / 8:30 PM ET, we are hosting a virtual conversation for those who would like to learn more about how nuclear disarmament fits into other global issues of war and peace. Sign up to attend here.

When it comes to reducing the risk of nuclear war, we’re stronger together. I hope you’ll join us.

And here’s a link to Rep. Khanna’s important four-minute speech on the House floor. Please share it with your Senators and Representative, urging them to watch and heed it.
