Yesterday Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a privileged resolution to censure Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for . . .

what?

Well, the resolution lists Tlaib's alleged offenses, but the list consists of

  1. false claims that she said antisemitic things, and
  2. accurate claims that she said things that Greene falsely labels antisemitic.

Perhaps the actual offense is . . .  not supporting ethnic cleansing and massacres of civilians in Gaza.

The House may vote on the resolution in the coming days. This creates an opportunity for our representatives to take a stand for de-escalation and peace, or at least for rejecting the propaganda that equates supporting peace and defense of Palestinian rights with antisemitism.

You may remember that Marjorie Taylor Greene is a bigot who has said that "Zionist supremacists" were the masterminds behind Muslim immigration to Europe -- and has suggested that Muslims do not belong in government and that California's deadly 2018 wildfire was started by a Rothschild-connected laser beam from space.

Greene's resolution begins with the ridiculously false claim that Tlaib "celebrated the Holocaust" six years ago.

It quotes Tlaib one year ago saying that it's not progressive to support Israeli apartheid. It isn't!

Then it falsely claims that Tlaib has not denounced Hamas' recent violence -- and accurately claims that she has admirably said the following:

‘‘The path to the future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance."

The resolution adds that Tlaib is guilty of "reposting a message on October 12, 2023, blaming America for allowing the deaths of Palestinian babies at the hands of Israel." Perhaps Tlaib shared knowledge of who Israel's chief weapons supplier is, or which nation routinely uses its veto to block otherwise unanimous votes at the United Nations to hold Israel to the rule of law.

Finally, Greene ridiculously accuses Rashida Tlaib of having "led an insurrection at the United States Capitol Complex on October 18, 2023." This alleged "insurrection" was a nonviolent Jewish American-led demonstration urging a ceasefire in Gaza.

This is a moment in which silence is betrayal, but in which speaking up requires the courage to face vicious slander.
