For decades, the U.S. government has repeatedly come close to launching a war on Iran but been dissuaded in large part by the opposition of the U.S. public. We are in a new dangerous moment when all the successes of the past can be erased by this long-prevented war finally being launched. The moment is made even more dangerous by the sheer number of disasters, wars and otherwise, in the news at the same time. But all is not hopeless. The U.S. government has great influence over the Israeli government if it chooses to use that influence, and can be made to listen to our demand for not beginning yet another catastrophic war. Click here to email Congress to pursue peace rather than hostilities with Iran. Cruel sanctions imposed on the Iranian people by the U.S. government for years, in violation of the Geneva Conventions, have not encouraged democracy or disarmament, much less overthrown the government of Iran. As in numerous other nations, sanctions have not worked as advertised but have imposed horrible suffering as feared, impoverishing millions of people. While the Iran agreement that was torn up during the first Trump presidency provided Iran with incentives to forego nuclear armament, those incentives are gone, and the policies of those now screaming most loudly about their fear of Iranian nuclear weapons -- including the policy of threatening war in violation of the United Nations Charter -- only encourage the Iranian government to pursue nuclear weaponry. Israel, of course, has nuclear weapons, as does the United States, which has assisted Saudi Arabia with nuclear technology, just as it long ago assisted Iran. Saudi Arabia has threatened to develop nuclear weapons if Iran does. Possible Iranian ally Russia possesses the most nuclear weapons on Earth. Click here to encourage Congress to back the world away from a nuclear war. |
