Dear Friend,

The world watched Sunday night as a drama about nuclear weapons swept the Oscars. Audiences were captivated by the urgency and power of a film whose director has explicitly affirmed the need to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Join us in organizing an event for Daniel Ellsberg Week 2024.

The movie’s story ends in 1954, when Robert Oppenheimer is stripped of his security clearance. But the work to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons continues today, and will last as long as nuclear-weapons countries possess the ability to end civilization as we know it.

In a series of op-eds this week, the New York Times highlighted the need for activism against nuclear threats.

It’s true that we need much more – and consistent – pressure to pull the world back from the edge of nuclear war and the unthinkable destruction that would come with it. Yet it’s also true that nuclear weapons are at the foundation of a global order where military intervention has supplanted diplomacy, while military spending is prioritized over the most basic building blocks of a functional society.

Defuse Nuclear War is a coalition of organizers and organizations working not just to reduce the risk of nuclear war, but also to build a world that no longer runs on endless war.

From June 10 to 16, a wide range of activities across the United States and beyond will honor the life and work of Daniel Ellsberg – by implementing the kind of vibrant activism that he participated in and inspired for more than 50 years. Join us to get involved in the struggle against nuclear weapons and the rest of the war system by organizing a picket line, teach-in, vigil, or other event. Check out a “menu” of suggested activities and resources here.

It will take a mass movement to reduce the risk of nuclear war. You can be part of building that movement.
