Jeff Cohen, RootsAction Education Fund’s cofounder who also founded the progressive media watch group FAIR, will discuss “Corporate Control of U.S. Media” on Wed, February 15, 7pm at the Civic Media Center (433 S. Main St., Gainesville). The event is free and open to the public (donations accepted).

Please come out and say hi to Jeff while he’s in Gainesville. Among the topics he’ll address:

  • lessons he learned as a paid pundit at CNN, Fox News and MSNBC – and censorship he encountered at MSNBC and elsewhere
  • FAIR’s studies of who gets to speak in mainstream media, and who doesn’t – and how former government officials are mis-identified
  • how U.S. media coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine contrasts with their coverage of U.S. invasions
  • comparisons of public broadcasting in other countries vs. U.S. public broadcasting
  • the growing power of the right-wing media sector
  • the importance of independent, non-corporate media today

Jeff Cohen was founding director of the Park Center for independent Media at Ithaca College, where he was an associate professor of journalism. He founded FAIR in 1986, and cofounded RootsAction in 2011. He was a cable TV news commentator -- and senior producer of MSNBC’s Phil Donahue primetime show until it was terminated weeks before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He’s the author of “Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media.” He has coproduced documentary movies: "All Governments Lie,” “The Brainwashing of My Dad,” and "The Corporate Coup D'Etat."
