This virtual event, scheduled for Thursday, January 9, at 5 pm Pacific / 8 pm Eastern, will examine the role of American militarism in fostering a less safe, less just, and less democratic world. Experts will explore critical issues such as resistance to U.S. foreign policy, the intersections between militarism at home and abroad, the true cost of exorbitant military spending, the existential threat of nuclear weapons, and more.

We will be joined by David Vine, author of Base Nation, Island of Shame, and The United States of War; Christian Appy, Director of the Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy and author of American Reckoning; Sonali Kolhatkar, journalist and author of Rising Up: The Power of Narrative in Pursuing Racial Justice and co-author of Bleeding Afghanistan; Emma Claire Foley, Defuse Nuclear War leader and RootsAction nuclear specialist; David Swanson, Executive Director of World BEYOND War, Campaign Coordinator at RootsAction, and author of War is a Lie.

We've been supporting successful and ongoing strikes. If you haven't already, add your name to this petition which we use when new strikes are started. Above, RootsAction cofounder Jeff Cohen joins a picket line of Amazon workers who labor for a notoriously greedy, fabulously profitable, anti-union corporation. Jeff reports that it was:

Very spirited. Multiracial, largely Latino workers. Most under 35. Good dialogue going on between strikers at this facility who've joined the Amazon Union and drivers still working, especially between strikers and workers they know who once supported the union campaign . . . but were still working. As one driver was coming out in his Amazon truck saying "Look, man, I need the money," his striking friend responded "That's why we're out here; we all need the money, more money than they've paying us."

The crime of genocide is happening. The intentional destruction of a people, in whole or in part, is genocide. The law is meant to be used to prevent it, not just review it after the fact.
