The debt ceiling negotiations have been an unmitigated crisis for working Americans and progressive values -- and a potent illustration of Joe Biden’s inability to lead in office. Instead of rejecting Republican attempts to hold the country hostage over the debt ceiling limit, Biden engaged in negotiation talks with GOP leaders, against the wishes of many in his own party. Biden clearly prefers the modus operandi of the old boys club in Washington vs. taking a stand for the policies he claims to support. And so, under the guise of “moderation,” Biden has allowed Republicans to extract a budget “deal” full of punitive and damaging measures that will only harm poor and working-class people, and the environment.

Lapses in leadership like this exemplify why we at RootsAction are encouraging Biden to “Step Aside, Joe.” As Biden compromises with extremist Republicans, he turns his back on working people, alienates members of his own party, and makes the case for his reelection even flimsier. For the Democrats to have a good chance of defeating a far-right Republican candidate for the presidency next year, it is critical that they field a better candidate than Joe Biden.

That’s why we’re asking you to add your name to our petition calling for Joe Biden to step aside and allow for an open Democratic primary process in 2024. If we want to beat the reactionary right, we’re going to need a stronger candidate.

Step Aside, Joe
