 Dear Friend, By now, you certainly know that Joe Biden has dropped out of the presidential race. What you might not know, though, is that RootsAction was the first national organization to call for Joe Biden to step aside as the 2024 Democratic standard-bearer. In fact, we were calling for him not to run for re-election way back in fall 2022, after the midterm elections. We ran ads in New Hampshire, ahead of the primary there, imploring him not to run. We picketed the DNC Winter Meeting in February 2023, telling DNC delegates that it was time for a different nominee. And, we ran full-page ads in the Hill, telling establishment Democrats to do the right thing and ask Biden to leave the race. It seems that our message finally got through. Grassroots pressure, combined with Democratic discontent, have succeeded in getting Biden to stand aside and avoid a near-certain electoral loss to Donald Trump. At RootsAction, we hope that this development will pave the way for a more progressive, engaging campaign for president to emerge — one that can defeat Trump and his neofascist politics.
