Legislation, already passed by the House and expected to be voted on in the Senate, would give the U.S. Treasury Department unilateral authority to strip the tax-exempt status of nonprofits it claims "support terrorism."

The evidence, if any, to support such a claim would not have to be provided to the accused. A nonprofit organization so accused would suffer irreparable damage even if eventually proven innocent. Its funders would need to be concerned about endangering their own status. Its reputation, like its Wikipedia page, would forever include that it was once declared guilty of supporting terrorism.

No penalties are established for those who abuse this power, should it be created.

S.4136, by depriving nonprofit organizations of basic rights that have been the best features of the U.S. government from Day 1, opens the door to abuse by corrupt officials rendered unaccountable for misuse of power.

The term "terrorist supporting" has been more often used in recent U.S. discourse to refer to nonviolent advocates for peace than to legislative bodies that arm foreign genocides. The danger in this bill should be apparent.
