Zohran Mamdani's primary victory has inspired people everywhere. RootsAction is proud to have been the first national organization to come out in support of his campaign for mayor of New York City. But Mamdani has not yet been elected. When India Walton (who is now RootsAction’s senior strategist) won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Buffalo in 2021, people were also very excited. Then the uninspiring, scandal-plagued, legally and morally challenged incumbent ran as an independent with corporate and right-wing backing, and won in the general election. New York Mayor Eric Adams has a similar plan. "This is a foot-on-the-gas kind of moment," Walton told Common Dreams days ago. "Do what is in your lane to do right: if you can donate five dollars, then donate five dollars; if you can spend an hour phone banking then spend an hour phone banking; if you can make a piece of original art and send it to the campaign to be used on campaign materials, do that. Whatever it is in your spirit, whatever time, talent, and treasure you have, do that, because this is gonna take all of us in order to make sure that he makes it over the finish line, and it's gonna send a resounding message in November, what this country wants, what this country needs, and what a city that really sets the stage for the tone of the rest of the nation could be." One thing we can do is click here to email our Democratic representatives and senators in Washington to urge them to endorse Mamdani. The endorsements of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders have already made a difference. |
