The SAVE Act would require documents that many people do not have and cannot easily obtain. Rather than making it easier to obtain those documents, Congress is working to use the lack of them as an excuse to deny U.S. citizens the right to vote in U.S. elections. Here is the email we've drafted for you to edit as you see fit and send to your Senators: As your constituent, I urge you to oppose S 128, the Orwellianly named Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Tens of millions of U.S. citizens do not have any easy way to obtain or cannot afford to obtain a passport, birth certificate, naturalization papers, or other proof of citizenship that reflects their current name. This includes disproportionately women who have married and changed their name, and those lacking financial resources. Unless you are going to make the required documents easily obtainable, it is unfair and antidemocratic to deny people the right to vote for lacking them. You should be working to make voting easier by instructing all states to join those 24 that have made voter registration automatic. Click here to send your emails. |
