At Roots Action, we rarely support candidates for mayor. But ZOHRAN MAMDANI is so special that we’ve made an exception. At age 33, Zohran is already a hugely respected and effective state legislator who announced today that he’s running for Mayor of New York. We encourage all of our RootsAction supporters in New York City to join Zohran’s campaign, donate to his campaign, spread the word about him. You can see how exceptional he is by visiting his campaign website. Before Zohran Mamdani was elected (and re-elected) to the New York State Assembly from Queens, he worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor helping low-income homeowners fight off eviction and stay in their homes. In the legislature, he’s stood up to corporate lobbyists as a champion for affordable housing. A graduate of the NYC public school system, Zohran has been a progressive organizer and advocate ever since – fighting for social justice, affordable healthcare and environmental justice. Zohran Kwame Mamdani is of Indian ancestry. He was born in Uganda and moved to NYC with his family at age 7. He’s the first South Asian man elected to New York’s state assembly, and only the third Muslim to be a member. Last November, along with activist/actress Cynthia Nixon and others, Zohran participated in a well-publicized hunger strike outside the White House to protest the suffering of civilians in Gaza. Inspired by his ally Bernie Sanders, Zohran is a proud democratic socialist. Bernie was elected Burlington, Vermont’s mayor at age 39. Let’s help Zohran become New York’s mayor next year at age 34. |
