Damn right, we’re proud of it! Zohran Mamdani announced his campaign for NY City mayor on October 23, 2024, and on that day we sent out an email blast that began: “At Roots Action, we rarely support candidates for mayor. But ZOHRAN MAMDANI is so special that we’ve made an exception.”

From day one, we knew he was exceptional. We called Zohran “a hugely respected and effective state legislator” who had “stood up to corporate lobbyists as a champion for affordable housing” -- and we compared the 33-year-old democratic socialist to Bernie Sanders, who’d been elected Burlington, Vermont’s mayor at age 39.

What we didn’t know on that first day is that Zohran was going to build one of the most exciting grassroots campaigns in the history of New York.

With a platform focused on working-class New Yorkers and affordability, Zohran is in second place and gaining on Andrew Cuomo, despite the millions in dark money going to Cuomo from big landlords and other corporate interests.

Early voting begins this Saturday, June 14. Primary election day is June 24.
