The great progressive historian and activist Howard Zinn wrote a book titled “You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train.” He was deeply aware that history moves in real time, and taking a principled stand is essential.

For the last eight months, the “pro-Israel, pro-peace” organization J Street has been trying to have it both ways -- backing continued U.S. arms shipments to Israel while urging that fewer Palestinians be killed. As its longtime president wrote last month, “Since we launched J Street 15 years ago, we’ve supported every dollar of every U.S. security package to Israel.”

By “security package,” he means such items as weapons and ammunition that today are being used to continue the slaughter of Palestinian children, women and other civilians in Gaza.

Tell J Street to finally demand a cutoff of U.S. military aid to Israel.

“No matter how much it might be paved with good intentions, J Street serves as a well-trafficked avenue for liberal American Zionism that continues to support the subjugation of Palestinian people, with steady patterns of deadly violence,” scholar Abba A. Solomon and RootsAction national director Norman Solomon wrote. “J Street has rigorously lobbied for the U.S. aid that provides Israel with the weaponry to inflict mass casualties.”

J Street has presented itself as a humane alternative to hardline AIPAC, and it offers a different tone than AIPAC -- but the two organizations are quite similar on more weapons to Israel. And J Street’s positions on Israel have been virtually identical to the disgraceful policies pursued by President Biden, literally making the Israeli war on Gaza possible with nonstop and massive U.S. military aid.
